Presentations at Joint Mathematics Meetings to Highlight Use of Minitab Statistical Software in the Classroom

Patricia Humphrey, Professor of Mathematical Statistics at Georgia Southern University, will present "Modeling – It’s harder than you might think" on Friday, January 17, at 4:40 p.m. in room 339 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Humphrey’s presentation will discuss the benefits of using Minitab to help introductory-level statistics students perform and understand statistical modeling.
“I believe students must walk before they can run, so modeling in my introductory statistics courses starts slowly,” Humphrey says. “One assignment for this course involves students using Minitab to model the value of houses in the Statesboro, Ga. Area. I’ll discuss this assignment, as well as the challenges involved in an investigation modeling the rate of leaf decay under different conditions.”
In addition, Sue Schou, Assistant Professor at Idaho State University, will present "Data Visualization Using Minitab, Google Fusion Tables, and Tableau" on Friday, January 17 at 1:00 p.m. in room 339 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Schou’s presentation will cover new ways to analyze and visualize data. Specific instructions will be discussed and a variety of data sets will be examined, using Minitab and other tools.
Brandon Theiss, an industrial engineer who has worked in the field for over 10 years, will present "A Starbucks Coffee in less than 5 minutes?" on behalf of Rutgers University. Theiss’s presentation, which is scheduled for 8:20 a.m. in room 345 at the Baltimore Convention Center, will discuss research that first attempts to define and parameterize the wait times that a customer experiences for a cup of coffee at the local Starbucks and then explores the performance of the retailer to meet customer expected wait times.
Minitab representatives will be on hand throughout the Joint Mathematical Meetings, as well as during the event’s expo, January 15 – 18 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
