Unicon to Develop Integration for Sinclair Community College (SCC) between Apereo Notification Portlet and Student Success Plan (SSP)
Gilbert, AZ (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- Unicon, Inc., a leading IT consulting, services, and support provider specializing in open source for the education technology market, today announced that it will develop an integration between the Apereo Notification Portlet and Student Success Plan (SSP) for Sinclair Community College’s (SCC) uPortal environment. This integration, or data source, will make it possible for advisors, faculty, and students to view action items from within uPortal in regards to their activity in SSP. The integration will be contributed back to the open source community so that any institution running uPortal and SSP may use it for a variety of scenarios. For example, a student could be reminded of an upcoming appointment with an advisor, or an advisor could be alerted of a new at-risk student they need to connect with. These reminders and alerts appear to users through the Notification Portlet, as items marked as completed or incomplete.
“Improving student success is a critical initiative for Sinclair and the main focus for our advising staff. Having a tool that allow us to effectively communicate with our students, providing reminders and action plans from their assigned advisor is one way we are working to be proactive in supporting that success,” said Andy Runyan, Chief Academic Advising Officer, SCC. “Sinclair would encourage any of the institutions in the open source community to consider using this new functionality, or to develop their own to share in support of all our students.”
An upgrade to the latest version of uPortal is required to make this integration possible. SCC will migrate their existing uPortal deployment to version 4.1 with Unicon’s assistance. uPortal 4.1 is a significant upgrade and boasts many attractive features. It is in use at several higher education institutions. Major new features include responsive design, customizable skins, performance and scalability improvements, along with a marketplace for adding portlets with an “app store” experience.
