Catapult Academy Student Awarded Scholarship to Florida A & M University
Camden, New Jersey (PRWEB) February 09, 2015 -- Catapult Academy student Wenda Dorcius received on-the-spot admission and a scholarship to Florida A&M University (FAMU) during the university’s Annual Recruitment Fair held on January 15, 2015, at Jean Ribault High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Wenda was one of 30 students awarded a scholarship by University President Dr. Elmira Mangum.
The Catapult Academy senior first learned about the scholarship award during the HBCU Holiday Hoops Classic College Fair held on December 18 in Albany, Georgia. Mr. Kenneth Tellis, Assistant Director of Student Services and Enrollment at Florida A & M University, announced the scholarship during the December event and has been instrumental in securing a successful the partnership between the university and Catapult Academy’s College, Career and Community Relations program. This is the second scholarship that his department has awarded to a Catapult Academy student. Seabon Dixon III, Regional Director for Catapult Academy in Jacksonville, was at the recruitment fair and was thrilled to hear the announcement.
“As Wenda approached the podium beaming, I knew she understood—that a quality education can reap untold opportunities,” said Dixon.
Florida A & M University is one of nine schools that have existing partnerships with the Catapult Academy dropout-recovery program. These partnerships provide Catapult Academy graduates the chance to attend schools that are educationally and professionally supportive, with smaller class sizes, on-campus professional mentors, and a history of strong school spirit and community involvement.
The recruitment event drew more than 250 attendees, including Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti, Superintendent of Duval County Public Schools, three county school board members, and several district high school principals.
