The One Million Words Asia Literacy Organization (http://www.onemillionwords.org) is proud to announce the successful completion of their first official charity event, the first of many planned throughout regions of Asia, with the goal of empowering the future, one book at a time.
The project ran from March 30th to 31st and it successfully donated 300 elementary and primary level reading books to the Binaton Elementary School located in Caraga, Davao Oriental, Region XI, in the north eastern area of Mindanao, Philippines. In 2012, Caraga was severely devastated by Typhoon Pablo, which claimed almost 2,000 lives. There have been numerous rebuilding efforts and relief projects in the region, but the One Million Words project is unique as it is supplying much needed reading resources to the local school, which has a student population of 208. The donations included class curriculum books as well as works of fiction for the students' enjoyment.
“The whole One Million Words team is extremely happy about how this event turned out,” said Dr. Robert Lockyer, CEO of the organization. "The response has been overwhelming and extremely positive, which is exactly what we were hoping for. We are always looking for more people to get involved, and we are especially grateful for the support from the local Davao Eagle Durian Club who volunteered their time and resources in transporting the books from Davao to Binaton, an 8 -hour mountainous trip each way."
A fundraising event and the official organization launch party is planned for April 7th, at Prime Bar and Grill on Lamma Island, HK. Tickets are $20HKD at the door and all proceeds go towards funding the next donation event. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The One Million Words organization is currently looking for donations and support to help promote and continue the mission of bringing literacy to the areas of Asia that need it most. Interested parties, please visit http://www.onemillionwords.org/involved.html for more information.
