Timmons Group, an ENR 500 Design Firm and a leader in multi-discipline civil engineering, environmental, and geospatial consulting services, is excited to announce that Northside Elementary School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina has been presented with the 2015 Gold Stewardship Development Award. This is the highest recognition given by the Greater Triangle Stewardship Development Awards (GTSDA) Program.

Originally a historic training school, Timmons Group provided survey, rezoning, permitting, environmental, landscape architecture, and construction administration services for the new three-story, 100,000 square-foot Northside Elementary School. The site features historic stone walls and steps, underground stormwater management, cistern for reclaimed water, a vegetated roof garden and terraced outdoor school garden, pervious parking, outdoor dining area, and art patio, and native plant materials. Northside Elementary School is the first LEED Platinum elementary school in North Carolina and is one of four LEED Platinum elementary schools in the country.

Facilities were judged based on the project’s use of natural resources, water quality protection, wildlife habitat protection, vegetation protection and enhancement, sustainability, integration with the community, long-term management and maintenance, and community outreach and education.

The Gold Stewardship Development Award was presented to Northside Elementary School on April 29, 2015 during a reception at The Power Plant at American Tobacco Campus in Durham, North Carolina.

“We would like to congratulate Northside Elementary School on achieving the 2015 Gold Stewardship Development Award,” said Blake Hall, Senior Project Manager at Timmons Group. “It was a pleasure to work with the school in achieving their vision for a redevelopment that embraces key elements of the original structure, while creating a sense of place that the Northside neighborhood can be proud of.”

The GTSDA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that recognizes outstanding residential, commercial, and public land projects in the Greater Triangle region in North Carolina. GTSDA honors developments that display environmental stewardship through conservation, protection, and appreciation of natural resources.
