For me plastic surgery is a perfect marriage of science and art. I am able to use my years of surgical training and artistic eye as a portrait painter to help my patients reach their aesthetic goals.

Dr. Babak Dadvand, a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, CA has dedicated his practice to the treatment of Gynecomastia in men. While female breast enhancement and reduction surgeries have become an open topic of conversation in communities and the press and media worldwide, men too, are gaining confidence by going under the knife.

But what is Gynecomastia? It means feminine breast, from the Greek words gyne meaning feminine and mastia meaning breast. It may be due to excess breast tissue, fatty tissue, or both. There are many causes of Gynecomastia, such as physiologic (due to puberty or middle age), pharmacologic (due to medications), and pathologic (due to hormone disorders or breast cancer).

Gynecomastia is a common issue affecting males of all ages and ethnicities. Studies have shown that up to 60% of men are unhappy with the appearance of their chests. For being such a common occurrence, the general public is still quite unaware of the prevalence of Gynecomastia, its causes, and available treatment. Gynecomastia remains the origin of embarrassment, shame, and low self-esteem. It’s often the butt of jokes with its hurtful, coined terms “moobs,” “man boobs,” etc. It can be a targeted source for bullying in teenagers, interfere with personal relationships, and hinder the ability to lead an active, emotionally healthy lifestyle.

Five years ago, Dr. Dadvand became aware of the growing conversations surrounding Gynecomastia in his male patients, who were coming in for other aesthetic procedures or treatments. What was surprising to Dr. Dadvand was that there were very few plastic surgeons who performed more than a handful of Gynecomastia surgeries a year. Never a subscriber to the “Jack of all trades, master of none” philosophy, Dr. Dadvand took it upon himself to dedicate a significant portion of his practice to the treatment of Gynecomastia and provide hope to men in need of this procedure. Over the years, Dr. Dadvand has honed his techniques and taken great pride in treating each patient on a special case basis. No two surgeries are exactly the same, and the results are always unique to the individual.

"For me plastic surgery is a perfect marriage of science and art. I am able to use my years of surgical training and artistic eye as a portrait painter to help my patients reach their aesthetic goals. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than seeing the gratitude a patient has for the results I have given them.” ~ Dr. Babak Dadvand

Dr. Dadvand’s personalized process with a patient begins by spending a significant amount of time during the initial consultation to first identify the cause of the Gynecomastia. He then develops a tailored surgical plan for that patient specific. Combining years of experience, surgical training, and an artistic background as a Fine Arts major with a concentration in sculpture, Dr. Dadvand both skillfully and artfully, helps his patients achieve their goal. He knows his job is complete when his patients can finally leave their homes without the embarrassment associated with their chests, something men without Gynecomastia take for granted. Having performed hundreds of Gynecomastia procedures yearly, Dr. Dadvand anticipates his caseload to continue to increase in 2016.
