Water Advocate Sharon Kleyne Criticizes Presidential Candidates On Flint Water Crisis
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) March 01, 2016 -- Popular radio host and passionate water advocate Sharon Kleyne recently took presidential candidates to task on her show, The Sharon Kleyne Hour. With the Flint, MI, water crisis in the headlines, Kleyne noted that the presidential candidates have ignored national water security. Kleyne has long contended that national, regional, and local security begins with water supply and safety. “Safe and abundant water,” says Kleyne, “is critical, not only for human health and survival, but for all economic development.”
Guest of the show, L. DeWayne Cecil, Ph.D., Chief Climatologist with Global Science and Technology, Inc., and Founder and Principal Scientist with Sustainable Earth Observation Systems, agrees. “The situation in Flint,” says Cecil, “was caused by well-meaning people trying to save money.”
“The city’s slightly acidic water corroded the its iron and lead pipes and fixtures in the city’s many older homes.” Cecil explains, “Corroded lead is highly toxic, especially to children.”
“The problem could have been corrected with an expenditure of less than $100 a day by the local purification plant,” concludes Cecil.
Flint, a city of 100,000, has 9,000 residents under 6 years of age.
Kleyne expressed concern that water only becomes a political issue in the U.S. during crises. The U.S. has no national energy policy, climate change policy or water security policy. President Obama recently authorized $80 million to fix the problem in Flint but has never addressed water security on a Federal level.
