Public School Teacher Creates Pass The Apple, An Online Consignment for Teacher Classroom Supplies, to Fund Projects on DonorsChoose
Chesterfield VA (PRWEB) April 27, 2016 -- Pass The Apple is pleased to announce on May 3rd, National Teacher Appreciation Day the launch of PasstheApple.com, a first of its kind online consignment store for teachers. PasstheApple.com gives teachers across the country the opportunity to find gently used classroom supplies that they can put to use in their classrooms for significantly less money than they would pay in stores.
PasstheApple.com uses the online consignment model. Experienced and retired teachers are able to list their gently used education materials for sale without paying any sort of listing fee. New teachers are then able to look through the website for discounted and even free teaching materials that they need for their classrooms. This way, perfectly good public school and homeschool materials don’t go to waste in storage units or garages. Instead, such items find their way back into classrooms where young teachers are struggling to put their limited supply budgets to the best possible use.
Pass the Apple was founded by Yolanda Terry, who started her career as a public school teacher at a Title I elementary school in Tennessee. Each year Ms. Terry was only given $500 for all of her classroom expenses. Like 99.5% of all US public school teachers, Ms. Terry’s budget didn’t go far enough and she was forced to pay out-of-pocket for education materials. With PasstheApple.com, Ms. Terry hopes that teachers like herself will be able to stretch their budgets further while also supporting one another with advice, tips, and shared wisdom.
To support that effort, Pass The Apple features a new blog called the Apple Seed with insights and advice from experienced teachers. The blog covers such topics as how to handle difficult students, suggestions for keeping your classroom organized, and creative projects that are sure to help students learn.
Pass The Apple is also pleased to announce its partnership, known as The Giving Tree, with DonorsChoose.org. This organization helps teachers around the country get funding for classroom supplies, new technology, and field trips. Whenever someone makes a purchase on PasstheApple.com, they are given the option to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar. Those extra cents are then donated to member-created projects on DonorsChoose.org.
“It’s important to me that we help the community of teachers we’re servicing in every way that we can. My goal is to equip and empower every teacher with the resources they need to teach without limits. It’s especially important to support our teachers in low-income schools where the stakes are the highest,” Ms. Terry said. “My hope for Pass The Apple is that it will become a thriving community where teachers not only pass along their supplies to one another, but also their wisdom and support.”
Teachers, homeschoolers, and educators of all types can sign up for a free membership at PasstheApple.com. Pass The Apple also offers a paid premium membership, the Red Apple Membership, for $4.99 per month. Red Apple members receive access to Pass The Apple’s e-Newsletter, promotional coupons, early access to sales, and other exclusive content. Additionally, Red Apple members are eligible for fundraising if they have a project that is in need of help listed on DonorsChoose.org.
Items ranging from preschool teaching materials to gently used tablets can be posted and purchased through PasstheApple.com. To learn more, visit PasstheApple.com or simply send an email to info(at)passtheapple(dot)com.
