Oyster River High School Renovating Outdoor Facilities With Shaw Sports Turf
Durham, New Hampshire (PRWEB) May 17, 2016 -- Big changes are coming to the athletic complex at Oyster River High School. The outdoor sports facilities are receiving a complete overhaul, including a new multi-use field made from synthetic turf.
The project, which began on April 4, will feature Shaw Sports Turf’s Legion system. Legion is a combination of high-performance monofilament fibers and a durable slit film fiber. The slit film fiber is a workhorse that will handle the workload, while the monofilament provides a more resilient surface that enhances performance characteristics.
“Being a multi-use facility, the hybrid nature of the product was the best of both worlds for the quick, grass-like conditions,” said Corey Parker, Athletic Director at Oyster River High School.
Parker said he saw the need to switch from natural grass to synthetic turf when he realized how often snow melt and seasonal rains forced him to close the fields because of muddy conditions until well into the spring.
Heavy use from lacrosse also made it necessary to close the field in the summer to allow grass to regrow for soccer in the fall. That meant investing in extra sod and seeding in the off-season.
“By putting Shaw Sports Turf down, we are now able to maximize our classroom time with physical education courses and keep the field open throughout the summer and during the rainy season in New England,” he said. “A turf field greatly benefits every single program we offer at the high school, the middle school and the community involvement on the weekends as well.”
Friends of Oyster River Track have been supportive of the school’s plans for athletic complex renovations for years, contributing approximately $300,000 for the new field from private fundraising efforts.
“This has been about 15 years in the making. It took a great deal of parent support and student-athlete support, and we were finally able to move ahead with the project,” Parker said.
With the help of Shaw Sports Turf Territory Manager Joe Kacevich, Oyster River High School representatives and parents were able to look at several area synthetic turf fields before selecting a product.
“Working alongside Kacevich was phenomenal. He really put a lot of attention and care into educating some of our community members on the benefits of artificial turf,” Parker said. “He was not speaking as a salesman, but speaking as someone who wanted to teach us about the industry. He was the driving force and the reason we went with Shaw as opposed to other turf companies.”
Kacevich said he is proud of Shaw Sports Turf’s partnership with Oyster River High School, which strives to contribute positively toward the betterment of students, society and the world.
“They are getting a product that will benefit their athletic program for years to come,” he said. “We know the Legion system is going to serve them well and wish them luck in the coming year’s sports campaigns.”
Construction around the Legion playing surface will also include a 400-meter track and a 1,000-seat bleacher system.
Parker hopes the project will be complete by Labor Day so the school can celebrate on the first home game day in the Fall.
