American University of Antigua College of Medicine and Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Announce Global MD Program
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 25, 2016 -- Today American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine and Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine announced the AUA-FIU Global MD Program. Students in the Global MD Program will receive a Medical Doctor Degree and Global Health Certificate from AUA and a Certificate of Completion from the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Clinical Clerkship Certificate Program.
The four-year program will introduce students to the health challenges faced by populations in global health markets. As the world becomes more connected, it becomes more diverse, and that diversity will be reflected in the physicians that graduate from this program and practice medicine in the United States and internationally.
This is an innovative approach to medical education as it promotes a lifelong interest and participation in the improvement of the health of all peoples regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, or country of origin. The curriculum incorporates global health issues that not only pertain to medicine in the United States, but how those issues impact healthcare around the world.
Global MD Program matriculants will spend their first two years of medical education at AUA’s Basic Science Campus in Antigua, the third year at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and the fourth at AUA and FIU affiliated clinical sites in the United States and internationally. Upon successful completion of the Certificate Program, fourth year students will have the opportunity to enroll in a clinical elective rotation at an international teaching site.
Applicants to the Global MD Program will apply jointly to AUA and the FIU Clinical Clerkship Certificate Program and must be accepted by both universities prior to commencing the Global MD Program. As a condition of acceptance into the program, applicants must be interviewed by faculty members from both AUA and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU. Students in the AUA MD program must fulfill the FIU Certificate Program academic requirements during the first two years of medical school.
