GCF’s 2016 Give & Go Program Keeps Over 39,000 Pounds of Household Goods Out Of Landfills
Durham, NC (PRWEB) June 07, 2016 -- Goodwill Community Foundation® has just completed its Give and Go program on 12 college campuses in and around Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville, NC. The Durham-based non-profit collected over 39,000 pounds of clothing and household goods as college students moved out of dorms beginning in April of this year.
The revenue generated from the donations at the 37 GCF Donation Centers & Stores in eastern North Carolina will be used to make grants that support employment and benefits for over 370 people, fund free online education for millions of people in English, Spanish and Portuguese, provide food from the GCF Farm, create 5,000 school kits to marginalized communities in eastern North Carolina, support to NICU families, provide free accounting services to youth-oriented organizations and fund grants with a focus on young people throughout eastern North Carolina as well as internationally.
“Give and Go perfectly represents how GCF supports the community,” says Rev. Dennis McLain, president, GCF®. “This allows students on campuses to redirect items from the landfill, encourages social responsibility, brings in donations to GCF and allows us to continue the vision of Creating Opportunities for a Better Life.”
The program began in 2010 with just one school. This year, at the 12 colleges and universities, the mission remains the same – recycle and reuse by diverting dorm room leftovers from the landfill and create a sustainable donation stream. The experience was customized to the needs of the campus, with trailers being utilized as donation sites in some instances, and collection boxes deployed in smaller venues.
