Mount Sinai Launches New Department of Health System Design and Global Health
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 08, 2016 -- The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai announced today the creation of the Department of Health System Design and Global Health, the first in the nation to leverage the strengths of a major U.S. health care system to learn from, and contribute to, global health systems.
Prabhjot Singh, MD, PhD, who will serve as the Department’s inaugural Chair, will also continue his role as Director of The Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai. The Department and The Arnhold Institute will work closely together.
The Department will be shaped by and directly influence the design of the Mount Sinai Health System through collaboration with executive and hospital leadership. Together, they will evaluate current health system designs, anticipate future needs, and deploy a new generation of health-improving systems. The Department’s output will also create opportunities for health systems around the globe to learn from and potentially adopt these innovations.

“For too long, there have been barriers between U.S. health systems and the world around us,” Dr. Singh said. “We face common challenges of delivering low-cost, high-quality health care at scale, addressing structural inequities, and finding sustainable ways to participate in the work of building healthy places. Our new Department, in conjunction with The Arnhold Institute for Global Health, will focus on training practitioners, designing new methods and developing solutions that collapse this barrier. The groundswell of interest from across the Mount Sinai Health System and Icahn School of Medicine signals a promising future.”
Specific goals of the new Department include pursuing health system design and transformation strategies for the Mount Sinai Health System and health systems worldwide, designing “next generation” care models, prototyping cost-effective business models to accelerate them, and pioneering data-driven methods and user-centric technologies to scale them. Emphasis will also be placed on recruiting faculty with diverse interests and expertise in economic and policy analysis, operations research, data science, interaction design, and other relevant fields, as well as unifying faculty across the Health System who are involved in, or wish to be involved in, health system design and development.
Dr. Singh was recruited to the Icahn School of Medicine in 2015 from Columbia University, where he was Director of Systems Design at the Earth Institute and a faculty member in International and Public Affairs. He has a PhD in neural and genetic systems from The Rockefeller University and a medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, and completed fellowship training in sustainable development at Columbia University, and an internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai.
The Department of Health System Design and Global Health will collaborate with Icahn School of Medicine institutes, departments, and hospitals as well as Health System entities including the Departments of Medicine and Population Health Science and Policy, the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology, Institute for Health Care Delivery Science, Institute for Next Generation Healthcare, and Mount Sinai Health Partners.
