Wimbledon Health Partners’ Findings Prove Echocardiograms are Critical to Identifying Serious Abnormalities
Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) June 14, 2016 -- Wimbledon Health Partners, the industry leader in on-site diagnostic testing for athletic and physician programs, reports abnormal findings in student athletes at nearly 70% of the schools where recent cardiovascular testing was administered. 94% of the cardiac abnormalities identified through echocardiograms were associated with normal EKGs lacking any evidence of disease.
Wimbledon Health Partners performs both echocardiography and EKG testing on each student athlete evaluated to account for those abnormalities that cannot be identified by EKGs but can through echocardiograms, and vice versa. The company applies the Seattle Criteria to the interpretation of its EKGs, resulting in a very low false positive rate. In recent test results, the echocardiograms were able to confirm the true positive findings of the EKGs and refute those that were false positive.
“Our echocardiography testing continues to identify far more clinically relevant pathology than an EKG alone,” states Wimbledon Health Partners’ Chief Medical Officer, Bradley J. Artel, MD, FACC, FASE. “I cannot stress enough the importance of administering both tests, an echo and an EKG, to correctly identify those conditions that can put a young athlete’s life at risk. It is extremely important for schools and parents to understand that a normal EKG does not necessarily mean a student is safe.”
In all abnormal cases identified by Wimbledon Health Partners, the athletic trainer was contacted immediately so the appropriate steps could be taken to ensure the safety of the affected athlete. All conditions detected warrant future care and follow up with a cardiologist.
