Dr. Kay Toomey is a pediatric psychologist who has worked for 30 years with children who don’t eat and is recognized around the world as one of the leading experts in understanding and treating infants and children with feeding difficulties. She is the developer of the highly effective, family-centered SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding program, which is successfully used by trained providers worldwide to assess and treat children with feeding problems. The program uses principles and practices from multiple disciplines including psychology, pediatrics, occupational therapy, dietetics, and speech-language. The approach combines sensory, motor, oral, behavioral/learning, medical, and nutritional factors and approaches to fully evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. The approach is grounded philosophically in the stages and skills of feeding found in typically developing children.
In addition to directing SOS Feeding Solutions at the STAR Institute Treatment Center, Dr. Toomey speaks nationally and internationally about the SOS Approach to Feeding. She also acts as a consultant to Gerber Products. Dr. Toomey helped establish The Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oral Feeding Clinic in the Denver Rose Medical Center Pediatric Feeding Center. Dr. Toomey co-chaired the Pediatric Therapy Services Department at Rose Medical Center prior to entering private practice.
