Rio de Janeiro Carnival

“Rio’s Carnival and the colonial hidden gems of Brazil are sure to captivate any traveler. After the Carnival Champions’ Parade, follow the Brazil Gold Route through colonial towns for a unique tour of contrasts to see the heart and soul of Brazil."

The nine-day Rio’s Carnival & Colonial Treasures of Brazil begins March 3rd, 2017 in the “marvelous city”, just in time for the Carnival Champions’ Parade. Feel the rhythms of Rio as you dance the samba and mingle with the Cariocas.

The extraordinary Champions’ Parade features the top six samba schools, each with around 3000 participants, and is held on the first Saturday after Carnival as a celebration to honor and congratulate the winners. The excitement and energy from Carnival still linger in the city, but the large crowds and overpriced hotel rates fade. CEO, Juergen Keller explains, “The Carnival Champions’ Parade is by far the best way to experience Carnival. Hotel rates and ticket prices drop significantly, and the city is less congested. During the Champions’ Parade, travelers gain a real understanding of the local culture.” Skip the crowds and the craziness while still experiencing the greatest festival in South America – all while saving money! Locals and tourists alike admire the dazzling costumes and the elaborate floats, which, combined with the welcoming culture and warm weather makes for a remarkable experience.

After the Champions’ Parade, take the road less traveled to Brazil's colonial gems. Follow the Route of Gold, from the colonial port of Paraty, from where gold was shipped to the Old World, to the heart of Brazil’s gold mining region, Ouro Preto. Step back in time and imagine Paraty during the 18th-century's booming Gold Rush. Stroll along the cobblestone streets and enjoy a schooner cruise on the quaint bay. Your crew prepares lunch onboard as you enjoy a dip in the water or walk along secluded beaches.

From Paraty, follow the Gold Route through Serra da Bocaina National Park to the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil’s gold mining center. Stop in the spa town of Caxambu, before overnighting in São João del Rei, where baroque art continues to flourish; cherish the impressive mountains and the rugged, subtropical landscape.

On Day 7, take a magical train ride to the colonial-era town of Tiradentes. Admire the remarkable soapstone statues sculpted by Aleijadinho, known as the "Michelangelo of Brazil”, and indulge your artistic senses with these masterful works. Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ouro Preto, which, with 50,000 inhabitants, was once the most populous city in the New World. Tour this picturesque colonial city and imagine life during the gold rush, when the town sparkled with wealth; the adorned gold churches, baroque architecture and cobblestone streets to this day reflect that to be true.

Day 9 takes you from Ouro Preto to Petropólis, high in the mountains just inland from Rio de Janeiro. Petropólis was once the summer home of Brazil’s Emperor, an escape from the heat of the capital. Visit the Imperial Museum and see the original furnishings from the 19th-century emperor, Dom Pedro II. End this tour back in Rio de Janeiro, where it all began, or continue to Iguassu Falls, Buenos Aires, Machu Picchu or even the Amazon! has been arranging Brazil Tours for over 15 years, however Rio’s Carnival & Colonial Treasures of Brazil provides travelers with a unique introduction to Brazil.
