Fastest-Growing Builder in the Next 100: Comstock Homes
California builder Comstock Homes’s commitment to scalability and targeting markets based on their economic fundamentals is what made it stand out as the Fastest-Growing Builder in this year’s Next 100 list. The company had more than 150 percent growth in 2016 going from 123 closings in 2015 to 308 closings in 2016. A very disciplined and patient acquisition strategy is leading Comstock Homes’s scalability and a target of 500 closings this year.
Fastest-Growing Private Builder Award in the Builder 100: Wade Jurney Homes
Wade Jurney Homes is a two-time winner for the Fastest-Growing Private Builder Award. The Greensboro, N.C.-based builder offers a price point that competes with resale across its five regions— Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro/Triangle in North Carolina, the coastal Carolinas, and Southwest Florida. Where efficiencies existed, Jurney fine-tuned the model moving remote selling from 90 to 100 percent of his homes, selling out of retail centers like Wal-Mart and Target.
Fastest-Growing Public Builder Award in the Builder 100: AV Homes
Scottsdale, Ariz.–based AV Homes is the recipient of the Fastest-Growing Public Builder Award for two years in a row. In 2011, AV Homes closed 174 homes. In 2016, the builder closed on 2,465 homes—a 41 percent growth from the year before. Since taking the lead in 2012, Roger Cregg has redesigned the company’s balance sheet and expanded its presence in existing and new markets with the purchase of Central Florida–based Royal Oaks Homes, Charlotte, N.C.–based Bonterra Builders and Raleigh, N.C. –based Savvy Homes. In addition to spreading out geographically, the acquisitions brought variety to the company’s product portfolio.
2017 Builder of the Year: D.R. Horton
D.R. Horton is the recipient of the Builder of the Year Award—presented each year to a builder that exemplifies excellence in its business strategy, its achievements, and its corporate leadership. Operating in 41 of home building’s top 50 markets in the U.S., D.R. Horton ranks No. 1 in 13 of them and hovers among the top five in 30 of the top 50. Expectations for the present year are for another in a sequence of stellar performances in unit volume—with 43,500 to 45,000 closings—revenues topping $13.4 billion, gross margins of more than 20 percent and overhead cost in the low-9 percent range.
“We have captured industry-leading market share by responding to the needs and wants of America’s home buyers and by introducing new brands to our product line,” explains Don Horton, who founded the company in 1978 and took it public in 1992.
