Intermedix Corporation brought over 400 physicians and disaster preparedness officials from the local, state and federal levels to Nashville this week for the company’s 2017 summit conference which took place Tuesday through Thursday at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center.

Each year, Intermedix organizes this three-day event which includes numerous networking opportunities, breakout sessions to exchange pioneering ideas and information sessions that focus on various timely and pertinent subjects within the overall health and safety ecosystem.

“The summit is our annual opportunity to strengthen relationships and directly interact with our respected industry leaders,” said Joel Portice, CEO of Intermedix. “This year, we were particularly proud to engage in sessions where experts shared how innovative practices, such as big data utilization, machine learning and simulation-based planning, can support civilians, patients and various communities when it comes to emergency medicine and preparedness.”

The overall goal of the summit is to have industry experts equip attendees with knowledge and best practices that will enhance their business operations moving forward.

Presentations and panel discussions covered relevant and timely topics such as how medical surges were monitored during the 2016 World Series, why and how resources should be applied to building community disaster coalitions and how a data science approach can assist hospital clinical staff in the early detection of sepsis. Other noteworthy sessions included how telemedicine, an emerging market trend, could be incorporated into practices and impact reimbursement from a billing and provider perspective, and discussing lessons learned from the January 2016 Avian Influenza outbreak in Indiana in terms of emergency response, and how the area can become better prepared in the future.

“This year’s summit was one of our best to date since it allowed us to obtain a considerable amount of valuable industry expertise from our highly-regarded speakers, and learn more about the truly remarkable advancements that have been made in the various fields our company works in,” continued Portice.

Both of this year’s keynote sessions also provided valuable insight on ways to approach daily work, and implement effective change in the health care and emergency management spaces. Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a social scientist and physician who was listed in Foreign Policy magazine’s annual list of Top 100 Global Thinkers, addressed how to use offline and online networks to make substantial impacts on society. The other keynote speaker, Dr. Michael R. Anderson, who was appointed by the Obama administration to chair the National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters at The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, covered strategies that should be used during disaster situations to assure adequate pediatric care is provided at local and regional levels.

In addition to the educational aspect of the summit, attendees had the chance to participate in various complimentary activities, such as a golf outing and guided tours, that introduced them to different parts of the Nashville area. This is the first year Intermedix hosted summit in its new headquarters location, and attendees received an official Nashville welcome from Mayor Megan Barry and Bob Rolfe, commissioner of The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development during the opening session.

“We were excited to host our signature event in our new headquarters location, and look forward to the continued discussions and new ideas that will emerge as a result of this forward-thinking and collaborative event,” concluded Portice.
