Sasha Nialla: Female Athletes' Mental Strength; University of Bridgeport Women's Gymnastics

Share Article

Photographer Sasha Nialla, in partnership with the University of Bridgeport Women's Gymnastics, photographed a series of female gymnasts at the elite level. The series explores what the audience sees as the illusion created by all the hard work, pain, talent, love and commitment of this beautiful sport.

I am celebrating the female athlete's mental strength in which she presents a performance that is seen by the viewer as physical strength.

Psychology is a major part of gymnastics. The most commonly reported attributes for successful and unsuccessful performance outcomes are psychological factors. Studies have proven female gymnasts possess higher levels of concentration than do athletes in other sports due to coping with adversity, peaking under pressure, goal preparation, freedom from worry, achievement motivation and personal coping resources.

Ms. Nialla's black and white photographic series focuses the viewer on the gymnast's ability to present a clean performance while hiding the multiple layers of psychology.
