Adolfson & Peterson Construction Breaks Ground with Wiggins Community
Wiggins, Colo. (PRWEB) May 28, 2017 -- The community of Wiggins came together for the groundbreaking ceremony of what will become their new middle and high school. The school band played, students and staff participated in the traditional turning of the dirt and the local principal even helped dig with the excavator.
Wiggins School District RE-50J worked with architect Hord Coplan Macht on analyzing their current buildings and systems and found the best value to reach their future educational goals would be to build a new addition.
The 56,450-sf expansion will provide a new middle and high school for the community. The project includes minor renovations to the elementary school and existing weight room, as well as the events center since the new addition will connect to the existing events center. The new school will be energy-efficient, code-compliant, safer and more educationally suitable for the Wiggins students and staff. Project highlights include an expanded parking area, a 250-seat auxiliary gym, a wrestling room, an agriculture education shop, a 350-seat theater and 18 new classrooms.
“This design and this building will be the result of hopes and aspirations of so many,” said Adele Willson with Hord Coplan Macht at the ceremony, who listed and thanked the many teachers, school staff and community members involved in the design planning.
“With this new building comes a brand new world for the Wiggins community and our kids,” spoke high school principal Trent Kerr. “This building will propel us into the future, something we haven’t been able to do since 1948.”
The $24 million project is funded by a local bond initiative from the November 2016 election. AP will manage the project with an occupied-phased approach to renovate and build while the current schools remain functional. The new addition is expected to be completed in December 2018.
