Jim O’Connor got his start in the life raft and survival equipment business in 1978 working for Landrigan Corporation of Boston and on Sept. 1, he became the proud new owner of the company having purchased it from Jean Landrigan.

O’Connor, who owns Life Raft and Survival Equipment company of Tiverton, R.I., will now have the combined resources of the two most well-known names in the industry. Landrigan Corporation is one of the oldest companies in the life raft and marine safety equipment business, started 50 years ago.

“We can now bring our knowledge and customer service over a wider territory,” said O’Connor, who started Life Raft and Survival Equipment in 1983. “I started working for Captain Landrigan as a life raft service technician. George was a mentor to me when he was my employer and we continued to have a strong relationship over the next three decades.”

Past president of the United States Marine Safety Association, O’Connor has been a safety advocate for the commercial fishing industry and was involved in the earliest Safety at Sea instructional conferences for the offshore sailboat racing world.

LRSE will continue to operate the largest life raft service facility on the East Coast at its Tiverton location and will offer its expert advice on safety at sea at both locations on Fish Road in Tiverton and Jeffries Street in East Boston.

Consumers, O’Connor noted, will now have the added benefit of a retail location for marine safety equipment that services the recreational and commercial marine markets in the Boston area as well as convenient drop-off locations for life raft and safety equipment service.

“We expect faster turn-around times on life raft servicing and LRSE will now offer authorized United States Coast Guard-approved servicing for all brands of life rafts throughout New England,” O’Connor added. “LRSE has been on the forefront of regulations in the commercial marine, recreational fishing and sailing industries. We know Safety at Sea from all ends and can be a resource for outfitting news vessels and keeping consumers ahead of the ever-changing rules and regulations.”
