Lyman Orchards Raises Funds to Fight Breast Cancer; Donates to Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center
MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. (PRWEB) November 09, 2017 -- Lyman Orchards presented Middlesex Hospital with checks totaling $4,500 in the interest of the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
In honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lyman Orchards hosted two fundraising events last month. The first event, on Oct. 3, was the Putt for Pink Golf Classic, a women’s only golf tournament played on both the Gary Player and Robert Trent Jones Courses, which raised $3,000.
“We are so proud to raise money for Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Center,” said Jason Beffert, General Manager, Lyman Orchards Golf. “We teach hundreds of women each year how to play golf, and this event is the culmination of a great season of learning. If we can educate these 80 women about the importance of early detection of cancer, it is a worth-while endeavor.”
Following soon after was the Apple Barrel’s Paint the Pumpkin Pink event, in which participants painted, glittered and bejeweled pumpkins in support of breast cancer prevention and raised $1,500 toward that goal. Members of the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center team staffed the painting area and spoke with guests about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. In addition, members of the Wesleyan University Women’s Ice Hockey team helped wash and dry pumpkins and they provided enthusiastic support to the pumpkin painters.
“This is one of our most favorite events of the harvest season,” John Lyman said. Lyman is the Executive Vice President of Lyman Orchards, and an eighth generation family member. “We are so appreciative that the Middlesex Hospital Cancer center staff comes out to our farm to educate and comfort our guests, many of whom have been personally impacted by this disease. We know that this donation is going to directly help women in our community who are currently fighting breast cancer.”
Sarah Moore, Director of Development at Middlesex Hospital, greeted the donations enthusiastically. “Lyman Orchards has always been a great philanthropic partner to Middlesex Hospital, and we are, as always, grateful for their outreach and for their partnership.”
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and one in eight women will develop the ailment in their lifetime. Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in America. However, if detected early, breast cancer has a 98 percent five-year survival rate.
