The Newest Addition to the 9NEWS Parade of Lights is something to behold
The Sparkling Ice Castle of the Future is something to behold. This week, in honor of National Apprenticeship Week, the Independent Electrical Contractors Rocky Mountain chapter (IECRM) conceived and built the newest float addition for the 9NEWS Parade of Lights debuting in Denver on December 1 and 2. Who better than electrical apprentices and master electricians to design the newest float in the upcoming annual Parade of Lights? The float was unveiled yesterday as part of IEC’s National Apprenticeship Week observance.
The Parade of Lights is presented by American Furniture Warehouse and produced by the Downtown Denver Partnership. To see the new float and plan your visit to see the parade, go to http://www.DenverParadeofLights.com.
The new float highlights state-of-the-art lighting features and utilizes fiber optics and computer-programmed LED lighting not seen before in the parade. The new float will make its inaugural appearance on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2 in the 2017 9NEWS Parade of Lights.
“IECRM's float celebrates the hard work of the men and women in the electrical and renewable energy industry,” says IECRM CEO Marilyn Akers Stansbury. “This newest addition to the 9NEWS Parade of Lights illuminates the importance of skilled trade workers to our economy and communities, and shines the light on skilled trades as a viable and sustainable career path for our future generations.”
IECRM held a design contest and offered its students, members, and industry partners the opportunity to involve its apprentices and be a part of this unique experience. The winning float design was selected by a panel of judges comprised of employees of the Downtown Denver Partnership and the IECRM Board of Directors. The final float concept presents a splendid array of LED lighting, wiring, fiber optics, and design applications to create the Sparkling Ice Castle of the Future – a dreamy winter scene of brilliance and wonder, utilizing state-of-the-art and energy-efficient lighting features.
“Who better than an electrical trade association and an electrical trade school to come up with a bright idea and bring it to fruition to illuminate the wintery streets of Denver for the Parade of Lights?” Stansbury added.
A volunteer team comprised of electricians, apprentices, and industry professionals are constructing the float using the most cutting edge LED lighting provided by IECRM industry partners. “We hope that our float captures the attention of many men, women, minorities, and military veterans who are looking for a rewarding career,” says IECRM Training Director Paul Lingo. “It’s a really great way for us to portray a career in electrical contracting and renewable energy in a fun and imaginative way.”
As many sectors in the U.S. economy grapple with a shortage of skilled workers, there’s a growing opportunity for young job seekers or those looking for a new career. The IECRM hosts hiring initiatives and is increasing its communications along the Front Range offering training and job placement in the electrical contracting field. Electrical jobs are expected to be in high demand over the next decade.

- In light of the recent natural disasters in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico, electricians stand shoulder-to-shoulder with disaster first-responders working rapidly and diligently to restore power to affected communities. While the severe shortage of electricians impacts these tragic situations, it also can cause the slowdown of construction overall. If there is no means to build a structure’s electrical nervous system, that structure cannot be started in many instances, and it certainly cannot be completed.
