Mahalo Cards reinvents holiday cards by combining traditional printed cards with augmented reality video

Remember the Harry Potter newspaper with moving pictures? As of today, holiday card customers can make a printed card just like that. Mahalo Cards, an app for creating unique holiday cards with embedded video, publicly launched today.

Mahalo Cards is an offshoot of the popular photo book company SimplePrints:, which offers mobile apps to create customizable photo books from your smartphone. According to SimplePrints CEO Matt Sullivan, the idea for Mahalo Cards was inspired by a lack of innovation in the century-old holiday card business, as well as a lack of good options to share videos of the kids with family and friends.

"We have all of these great family videos that we take with our smartphones now. The holiday season is a great time to share these videos, but we struggle with an appropriate medium… the printed holiday card is the perfect way to reach out to family and friends. With Mahalo Cards, we integrated our new augmented reality technology into printed cards to let people embed their personal videos in the cards themselves. The printed cards look just like last year’s holiday card, but within each card there is a special video that recipients can view with any smartphone. Our hope is to create a unique experience that brings people closer together,” Sullivan explains.

To send a Mahalo Card, customers install the free app and select a card design. From there customers are given the option to shoot a video, use an existing video, or create a video slideshow. When recipients receive their card, they can bring the personal video message to life using the augmented reality technology built into the free Mahalo Cards app. Premium 5.5”x4” folded cards with a linen finish start at $1.11 per card.

This year Mahalo Cards offers families a truly unique holiday card experience that has never been seen before. Interested customers can try Mahalo Cards by visiting:
