Gilbane Building Company Receives Merit Award for Excellence in Construction for Duke University Student Wellness Center
DURHAM, N.C. (PRWEB) December 14, 2017 -- Gilbane Building Company, a leader in higher education construction, received a Merit award for the construction of the Duke University Student Wellness Center in Durham, North Carolina from Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas (ABC).
The new facility centralizes Duke Reach programs, Student Health Services and DuWell, as well as a pharmacy, physical therapy services and a meditation garden.
The modern, three-story facility was designed specifically to streamline wellness services for the University and its resources to be under one roof to create a holistic and integrated approach to individual wellness. The 72,000-square-foot facility created an inviting and more open space. The design’s transparent two-story entry brings natural light into the building and allows for views of the outdoors. Integration of multiple materials were used to give the appearance of continuity including terracotta, self-consolidating concrete, storefront system, curtain wall, mixed metal panels and balcony pavers. The complex curtain wall and Glulam structure incorporated natural elements from the outdoors into the facility with use of reclaimed wood and stone locally sourced from the surrounding forest. Other trees were reintegrated into the building through use in wood veneer for furniture, decorative wood wall paneling and wholetree benches.

Other amenities include a meditation garden, student service offices, and student commons area for conversation and collaboration.
