Sharon Kleyne, founder of Bio-Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® and host of the nationally syndicated radio program The Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water, Global Climate Change and Your Health on VoiceAmerica sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, recently welcomed biologist and prolific author, C. D. Shelton, Ph.D., to her program to discuss the world’s water crisis and civilizations in history that have vanished because of a lack of water.
Shelton, a Professor of Biology, began writing novels in 2008 in which he shares with college students and young adults his passion and knowledge for plant life, nature, medical and health related topics. His first three novels, he explained to Kleyne, form a trilogy set in the Amazonian Rainforest 13,000 years ago. The Age of Eternal Fire, Journeys in the Primal Forest and Uprising on the Rio Jari imagine a world forever altered by a cosmic event—the slamming of a comet into the earth. In an instant, hundreds of species become extinct. Rainfall is altered and with it vanish some of the civilizations that once thrived in the region.
This is a pattern, says Shelton, which has been repeated many times in the course of earth’s history. “For example, 7,000 years ago,” said Shelton, “currents along the African coastline, the cradle of civilization, changed. That change altered rainfall patterns. As a result, people had to move to other locations.” Another example is the fate of the Anasazi (or ancestral Puebloans) who transitioned from a hunter/gatherer to an agrarian society. Remnants of their five-storey dwellings can be seen to this day, a testament to their success. Yet, as an epic drought stretched over a period of 14 years, the people gradually broke apart and moved away to other locations. In their desperation, they sought water.
“Historical migrations follow the water,” Kleyne added. “Even today,” Kleyne added, “5,000 children die each day worldwide for lack of fresh, clean water.” Without water we suffer dehydration, Kleyne explained, pointing out that dehydration leads to outbreaks of disease and sickness. “We need to get personal about water,” said Kleyne.
Shelton agreed, saying that we should hold industries and manufacturers accountable. If they pollute, they should be severely fined. “We need much tougher pollution laws,” said Shelton. Shelton and Kleyne caution that if we don’t want to see all civilizations vanish, we need to ramp up our water conservation efforts and do it now.
