Authess, a leader in AI-driven, authentic assessments, won a coveted Brandon Hall Group Gold Medal award for excellence in the “Best Advance in Technology for Testing or Learning Evaluation” for its entry “Measuring What People Can Do, Not Just What They Know.”

Authess earned the 2017 Excellence in Technology Gold Award for its partnership with The New England College of Business (NECB), a leading higher education institution offering quality education and online degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The winning entry leveraged the Authess platform to deliver authentic and performance-based assessment as a core component of NECB’s Principles of Banking course. NECB’s Donna Viens, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Paula Bramante, Vice President of the Center for eLearning Excellence, championed this partnership as part of “NECB’s commitment to focus on the skills employers value most, including empathy, information analysis, communication and creative problem solving.” Authess offers an end-to-end solution for authoring, delivery and scoring that is powered by machine learning and advanced analytics.

Paul Crockett, Chief Executive Officer of Authess, said, “The Authess platform helps educators and companies assess the skills that employers consistently identify as most important to their success, but are difficult to measure with conventional methods. Our partnership with NECB is a great example of how Authess can expose learners and professionals to the types of skills that will help them thrive in their careers while giving educators and employers insight into how someone thinks and performs while solving a real-world problem. We’re proud to have won this award with NECB and look forward to helping other educators and employers measure the skills that matter most in today’s economy.”

By adding an authentic assessment built on the Authess platform, Viens was able to incorporate the teaching and measuring of these “soft-skills,” now deemed to be of critical importance to employers across all verticals. The use of machine learning and data analytics allowed NECB to cost-effectively document measurable improvement of in-demand skills such as critical thinking, analytic reasoning and problem solving. Due to the success of this program, the NECB Academic Affairs department is considering incorporating Authess across the curriculum, including their capstone course, currently in pilot phase.

A panel of veteran, independent senior industry experts, and Brandon Hall Group analysts and executives evaluated the entries. “Human capital management is evolving faster than at any time in history, and it is powered by innovative technology developed and implemented by organizations big and small,” said Rachel Cooke, Chief Operating Officer of Brandon Hall Group and head of the awards program. “The technology innovators who won Excellence Awards this year were focused on providing users with a better overall experience. That is what our research says employers want, and our award winners are leading the way.”
