The microbiome field is rapidly growing and there’s a huge need for more education and guidance in this area, for both patients and healthcare providers.
SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) January 29, 2018
uBiome, the leading microbial genomics company, has launched the first Microbiome Counselor™ program. Following in the footsteps of the genetic counseling profession, Microbiome Counselors will help individuals interpret and improve microbiome data for better health and wellness. Although some counselors may be physicians, Microbiome Counselors will not provide medical advice. Instead, they will counsel patients on diet, lifestyle, and treatment adherence to improve their health in the context of the microbiome.
The microbiome has been linked to many conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, kidney stones, and more. There is an expanding need for patient education and counseling that Microbiome Counselors can fulfill.
uBiome is pleased to welcome Dr. Christina Palmer, MD, a medical liaison at the company, as the first Microbiome Counselor. She will be leading the network of Microbiome Counselors to help people understand this complex and rapidly evolving area of healthcare. Dr. Palmer is a practicing physician with a focus on prevention, nutrition, and the microbiome.
According to Dr. Palmer, “The microbiome field is rapidly growing and there’s a huge need for more education and guidance in this area, for both patients and healthcare providers. I’m excited to work with uBiome to translate microbiome testing and scientific research into personalized microbiome wellness plans for individuals.”
Dr. Jessica Richman, uBiome co-founder and CEO, says: “As the pace of scientific research about the microbiome grows, uBiome’s role in the industry does as well. We produced the world’s first wellness product based on the microbiome, the world’s first sequencing-based clinical microbiome test (SmartGut™), and the world’s first women’s health test to genotype all clinically relevant strains of HPV (SmartJane™). We now extend this success to our next initiative: the Microbiome Counselor.”
