Allegheny Health Network Provides Medical Support at 41st Annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Winter Games
PITTSBURGH (PRWEB) February 02, 2018 -- For the fourth consecutive year, an Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Sports Medicine team provided on-site medical support to athletes competing in the Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) Winter Games. The 41st annual Winter Games, featuring more than 300 athletes and 135 coaches, were held January 28-30 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Greensburg, PA.
The team, led by AHN orthopaedic surgeon Robert Schilken, MD, included sports medicine fellows Ravi Ved, DO, Melissa Roscher, DO, and Brian Stone, DO, as well as Dolores Schilken, BSN, a nurse at AHN’s Peters Township Surgery Center, and athletic trainers Richelle Beall, ATC, and Timothy Smith, ATC.
“While our role is to meet the various sports medicine needs of the athletes so that they can perform at their highest level, the AHN team is the ultimate winner as we have the opportunity to spend time with these outstanding individuals and get to know them throughout the competition. It is a true honor to participate in the SOPA Winter Games each year,” said Dr. Schilken.
Special Olympics Pennsylvania provides year-round training and competition in 21 Olympic-type sports to nearly 20,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This year’s Winter Games featured competitions in alpine and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and speed skating.
Designated an Official U.S. Olympic Regional Medical Center, AHN is one of a few leading medical providers selected by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to provide comprehensive medical services to elite Team USA athletes, including orthopedics and sports medicine, primary care, cardiovascular care, neurosurgery, physical therapy, and more.
