IT Industry Adds 11,500 Jobs in January, Up 26 Percent

This is the first time in several months that all subsectors within the insurance industry experienced growth.

The IT industry added 11,500 jobs in January, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report on Friday, February 2, 2018.

“Employment in the IT industry increased by 26.4 percent, jumping up from 9,100 jobs added in December to 11,500 jobs added in January,” said Jay Rollins, owner of, a leading IT jobs website. “This is the first time in several months that all subsectors within the insurance industry experienced growth.”

The multiple sectors that form the IT industry now employ 4,874,000 persons, and have added 129,100 jobs since January 2017. The IT industry includes employment information from the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services industry group, and the management and technical consulting services industry group.

Data processing and hosting added 1,100 jobs in January, after having lost 1,300 in December. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has increased by 8,200 jobs and now employs 320,400 persons.

Both industry groups, management and technical consulting services and computer systems design, added similar job numbers in January, growing by 4,500 and 4,600 jobs, respectively. Computer and electronic manufacturing now employs 1,057,700 persons while computer systems design employs 2,068,800 persons.

Computer electronic manufacturing increased by 1,300 jobs in January, a drop from the 3,900 jobs added in December. Since January 2017, the subsector has added 20,700 jobs and now employs 1,057,700 persons.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment added 200,000 new jobs in January while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent for the fourth consecutive month. Job gains for the month occurred in construction, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing.
