Biennial Honor Roll Selection is Third in a Row for NLN CEO

It’s so critically important to acknowledge diversity and inclusion which represent a core value of the NLN.

A role model among executives of color in health care, Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, CEO of the National League for Nursing, has been chosen for the select 2018 list of Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine, the League has learned. Featured in the February 26th issue, these distinguished individuals will be formally recognized at a celebratory awards dinner on Thursday, July 18, in Chicago.

In its sixth year, this biennial recognition program, co-sponsored by MPI companies Furst Group and NuBrick Partners, honors the top minority healthcare executives who are influencing policy and care delivery models nationwide. In doing so, they are also highlighting the continued need to nurture organizational diversity.

“America is becoming a more diverse nation, and it is critical that health care leadership reflects the broader society,” said Merrill Goozner, editor of Modern Healthcare. “These men and women and the organizations they represent have led the way in promoting diversity within their ranks.”

This year’s honor marks the third year in a row one of the leading publications in health care has cited Dr. Malone for her stature within the industry. Last year, she was among Modern Healthcare’s top 25 women in health care, another prestigious list published biannually. In 2016, Dr. Malone was named for the second consecutive year and third time within the decade by Modern Healthcare in its 15th annual survey of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.

“I couldn’t be more delighted with this news,” said Dr. Malone. “Clearly, NLN initiatives aimed at increasing diversity within nursing education, at all levels of higher education from administration to students, have resonated beyond the halls of academia. I am so proud to head the NLN team of professional and volunteer leadership in co-creating and implementing these vital programs.”

Equally excited with Dr. Malone’s selection, NLN President G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, a professor and associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion/chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, remarked: “It’s so critically important to acknowledge diversity and inclusion which represent a core value of the NLN. It’s no secret that instilling cultural sensitivity in all nursing graduates and increasing the numbers of graduates from marginalized and underrepresented sectors of society improves leadership capabilities organizationally, health care delivery at the bedside and health outcomes for patients. As CEO, Bev has consistently made issues of diversity and inclusion a priority in advancing the health of our nation and the global community. I have been privileged to work alongside her.”
