Female-led agency says cannabis needs a different approach

Former J. Walter Thompson Canada content chief and social media marketing veteran Rebecca Brown announced today the creation of Crowns, a brand new advertising agency focused on a brand new market: cannabis.

Crowns will help cannabis businesses across North America build brands, tell stories and reach customers while working inside the constraints of regulatory limits — which Crowns doesn’t see as a limit at all.

“Constraints spur creative minds on to ingenious solutions,” says Brown. “We have a lean, focused team with decades of experience in traditional advertising, adtech and startups, and we use an iterative agile process that thrives on these kinds of limits.”

Crowns has clients in Canada and California and strategic partnerships with Cannabis Compliance Inc., the leading consulting firm in risk mitigation, due diligence and regulatory compliance for commercial cannabis producers and resellers, and Abacus, a digital performance agency. The former will help Crowns navigate regulation while the latter has been tapped to build cannabis-specific customer data and targeting products.

To help devise a new advertising playbook for cannabis, Crowns has assembled an advisory of bleeding-edge thinkers that includes cannabis culturalist Precious Chong (daughter of Cheech and Chong’s Tommy Chong), visual content queen Mindy Loverin (Shutterstock) and design guru Paul Rowan (co-founder of Umbra). More advisory announcements will be made in the coming weeks and will include leaders in digital publishing and adtech.

Cannabis advertising needs creative problem-solvers who represent the diversity of the cannabis market. Crowns is women-led, inclusive and data savvy and is building a roster of clients who reflect diversity and variety in their products, market size and ownership.
