APSP Launches New Commercial Council
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (PRWEB) April 06, 2018 -- The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals announces the formation of its new Commercial Council, a group comprised of industry representatives eager to tackle key issues, risks and opportunities facing the design, construction, operation and servicing of commercial pools and spas.
The Council will provide a platform for pool and spa professionals who are dedicated to volunteering their time, talents and energy to advancing the needs of the commercial pool and spa segment.
“As APSP sharpens our focus on advancing the industry and its interest, we look forward to strengthening the commercial pool and spa industry segment,” said APSP President & CEO, Lawrence Caniglia, JD, CAE. “The creation of this council helps us keep moving the industry forward.”
The eight member Council is made up of representatives from a variety of pool and spa industry segments who will serve one year terms. Members of the Commercial Council include:
Derek Downey, Principal, Legal Pools, is an experienced pool contractor and acknowledged expert in the swimming pool design, construction and maintenance industry. He has been providing expert deposition and testimony since 1995. Derek has been highly active with APSP, formerly NSPI, for 20 years. He has served on the NSPI Board of Directors from 1998-2005, the APSP Builders Council from 2014-2015 and has been on three Standards Writing Committees. In addition to his council and committee service, he has been a presenter at the International Pool| Spa| Patio Expo and at other industry affiliated events.
Jason Schallock, CBP, CSP, is the general manager at Anderson Poolworks. He is highly active with APSP on both the national and local level. Jason was APSP’s 2016 CBP Certified Building Professional of the Year and was a founding member of the APSP Northwest Pacific Chapter. He is highly active with the National Plasters Council and has worked on the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code Tech Support Committee on recirculation and filtration. Also, he participates on a Joint Task Force with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the International Code Council to align the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) and the International Spa and Pool Code (ISPSC) code. Recently, he worked with the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code (CMAHC) to develop an ad hoc committee for swimming pool ventilation and indoor air quality. In addition to his council and committee participation, Jason is a proponent and speaker for correcting aquatic air quality issues nationwide and works closely with the Oregon and Washington state’s environmental health authorities.
Steve Barnes, is the director of science and compliance at AquaStar Pool Products. Prior to AquaStar, he was the Safety and Compliance Manger at Pentair Aquatic Systems. For over 30 years, he has been involved with the aquatics and manufacturing industry. Since 2004, he has been the Chairman of APSP’s Technical Committee.
Dennis Berkshire, is the president at Aquatic Design Group. He has over 30 years of experience in the aquatics industry, with field experience in swimming pool design, construction and operation, and training. As an expert on swimming pool operation, he has worked with several states on swimming pool environmental health codes. He recently worked with the Centers for Disease Control on the new National Model Aquatic Health Code. In addition, Dennis is an instructor for the Certified Pool Operator course and the Aquatic Facility Operator course and has trained nearly 1,000 swimming pool and aquatic facility operators. As President, Dennis is responsible for project management, project commissioning, facility assessments and studies.
Kris Bridges, is the Building Official for the City of Martinsville, VA. He is a Master Code Professional (MCP). For over 22 years, he has had several positions in the industry including Property Maintenance and Amusement Inspector and Combination Code Inspector for Danville, VA up through Building Official. He holds 22 ICC certifications. In addition, he was appointed to the Virginia Manufactured Housing Board by the governor, is on the Board of Directors for the International Code Council and has previously served on the ICC-ES Board of Managers, as Treasurer of ICC Region VII and is a Past President of the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association (VBCOA).
Kenneth Gregory, is the manager of compliance and safety at Pentair Aquatic Systems. For over 20 years, he has held several positions in the industry. Prior to Pentair Aquatic Systems, he was the president of Evolution Pool and Construction Services. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Stephen Neville, is the Director of Business Development and Aquatic Operations with Island Construction Corporation. After joining Island Construction Corporation, he co-founded Stainless Aquatics, a Division of Island Construction Corporation, which focuses on rooftop and podium deck pool, spa and water feature installations in stainless steel and shotcrete applications. For over 17 years, Stephen has been highly active with the industry primarily in the commercial segment and has served on the APSP Builders Council since 2014. He is currently certified as a CBP®, CSP®, PPSO®, PPSO Instructor® through APSP and also holds a B.S Degree in Criminal Justice as well as a CPO®, AFO® and NPC startup certification.
Doug Winkler, is the president of Winkler Pool Management. He has over 40 years of experience in the aquatics industry. Doug is high active with APSP and serves on many volunteer boards including the APSP National Board of Directors and on his local Mid-Atlantic APSP Chapter as Treasurer.

The new Commercial Council plans to hold their first meeting May 1 in Denver. Open to APSP members and interested parties in the commercial and municipal pool and spa sector of the industry, this first meeting will lay the foundation for the group to identify important issues and create a plan of action and timeline.

Focusing our efforts on the commercial and municipal pool and spa sector of our industry, is extremely important and long overdue,” said Vice President, Technical and Standards, Carvin DiGiovanni. “Through identifying and addressing the issues of our commercial pool and spa stakeholders, APSP can effectively devote its resources towards finding solutions to help grow the commercial pool and spa segment.”
