New Virtual Public School Available to Serve Michigan Families in Fall 2018
DETROIT (PRWEB) April 04, 2018 -- Lighthouse Connections Academy (LCA), a tuition-free, full-time virtual public charter school, has been authorized by Oxford Community Schools to serve students in grades K-12 throughout Michigan beginning in the 2018-19 school year. The school, which will serve students across the state, will utilize the nationally-recognized Connections Academy program.
Lighthouse Connections Academy expects to serve approximately 300 students statewide during its first academic year, and will expand to serve additional students in subsequent years. Information sessions will be available for families to learn more about the program.
“As demand for virtual learning continues to grow, we are excited to offer Michigan families another quality education option through the launch of Lighthouse Connections Academy,” said Kerry Rice Ed.D., Lighthouse Connections Academy board chair. “In uniting Oxford Community Schools, a high-performing school district, and Connections, a leader in high-quality online learning services, Lighthouse Connections Academy is well-positioned to serve as a ‘cyber school of excellence’ for families statewide”
Lighthouse Connections Academy joins two existing virtual charter schools in the state—Michigan Connections Academy and Great Lakes Cyber Academy—that also utilize the Connections Academy program and its award-winning curriculum. Due to limited enrollment capacity, demand for these virtual schools has often exceeded the schools’ available space. The Lighthouse Connections Academy board, together with Oxford Community Schools, will offer new pathways for those students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enroll in a cyber school supported by Connections.
"As the President of the Oxford Schools board, I am proud of our developing relationship with Lighthouse Connections Academy,” said Tom Donnelly, Oxford Community Schools Board President. “How important it is that we diversify our approach to bringing the highest level of education to Michigan students."
The Connections curriculum, which meets Michigan Learning Standards as well as iNACOL’s National Standards for Quality Online Courses, allows students to learn from home, working closely with licensed teachers using daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs. A parent, or another adult “Learning Coach,” plays a key role with the licensed teacher to monitor student progress in the home.
Lighthouse Connections Academy students will be able to enroll in core classes, engaging electives, honors and AP course offerings, and have the opportunity to participate in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. Students will access online instruction, engage with interactive web tools, and collaborate with teachers and peers in real-time online classroom sessions.
