576 Students Advance to National MathCON Finals in Chicago, Guest Star Tom London- Tech Magician & Hacker to Perform
CHICAGO (PRWEB) April 05, 2018 -- Five hundred-seventy six students out of 51,400 students nationwide that participated in the online competition have qualified for and are competing at the 10th annual National MathCON Finals held on May 5 at the University of Chicago (UIC) Forum in Chicago.
The finals competition is a day-long event, including the 90-minute testing window inclusive of 70 multiple choice and constructed response questions. The MathCON competition questions include several mathematical disciplines including algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, number systems and pre-calculus and must be completed without the use of calculators.
The day-long finals event will bring together elementary, middle and high school students to compete for various prizes and national prestige through various math questions and activities. In addition to the testing portion, students at this year’s competition will enjoy a mathematics magic show by renowned magician, Tom London-Tech Magician & Hacker, a variety of interactive mathematics games, entertainment by Chicago DJ Ryan and a pizza party with other participants. "The competition encourages students from all over the nation to engage in math now, preparing them for a life and career as future innovators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It does this by making math both competitive and rewarding, but also fun and interesting.”
The National Finalists (top student in each grade 5 through 12) will receive a cash prize of $300. The Gold medal winners will receive $200; Silver medal winners will win $100; and Bronze Medal winners will be awarded $50. This year, the top 576 student finalists are representing 32 states and are traveling from as far away as California, New York and Rhode Island.
