Wireless Charging Mat Sales Receive a Boost in the U.S., As Consumers Look to Cut the Charging Cord

Q4 2017 sales surpassed totals for the remainder of the year and 2018 is off to a strong start, according to NPD

The surge in wireless charging sales can, in part, be attributed to Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone X product releases, which included the ability to wirelessly charge the new devices.

According to The NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service, dollar and unit sales of wireless charging mats in Q4 2017 have more than doubled compared to Q4 2016, growing 193 percent and 142 percent, respectively, in the U.S. While sales have slowed since Q4, January 2018 dollar sales were more than double the dollar sales for the same month last year, with wireless charging representing 11 percent share of the mobile power market revenue.

“The surge in wireless charging sales can, in part, be attributed to Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone X product releases, which included the ability to wirelessly charge the new devices,” said Stephen Baker, vice president, industry analyst for The NPD Group. “This trend is similar to what we saw after Apple’s decision to remove the headphone jack in 2016, which, in part, drove wireless headphone sales growth.”

Since the iPhone 8 launched, average weekly sales for wireless charging were nearly three times higher than the 13 weeks prior to launch, according to NPD’s Weekly Retail Tracking Service[1]. With increasing sales comes more opportunity for brands in the charging market, with Belkin and mophie being among the biggest beneficiaries to date.

According to NPD’s Checkout E-commerce Tracking service, wireless charging mat device sales online followed a similar pattern, with Q4 2017 seeing the highest unit sales, totaling 60 percent of online sales for the year. Additionally, wireless charging represented 20 percent of online sales in the mobile power market in December 2017. In January 2018, online dollar sales of wireless charging mats were more than three times higher than January 2017 sales.

“New smartphones often deliver rapid growth opportunities in the mobile accessories space, this growth in wireless charging being a prime example,” noted Baker. “We expect to continue to see high revenue growth in this category in 2018, as more companies deliver innovative products into the category, such as the highly anticipated wireless charging solution from Apple.”
