On Wednesday, May 2, TEDxLadyBirdLake will host an event at the Austin Central Library from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This independently organized event, licensed by TED, will feature local voices stemming from Austin talking about what fuels their passions and what keeps Austin “weird.”

Launched in 2009, TEDx is a program of locally organized events that bring the community together to share a TED-like experience. Some of the best talks from TEDx events have gone on to be featured on TED.com and garnered millions of views from audiences across the globe.

TEDxLadyBirdLake is excited to shed light on how Austin has become a new hub for innovation and growth that is in large part fueled by the resilient and out of the box mentality of “Keeping Austin Weird.” As a result, this mentality of Keeping Austin Weird feeds the inner drive and passions of the many diverse and wonderfully creative voices that make up the Austin community.

Due to the efforts of Executive Producers Cassaundra and Alba Melgar-C’De Baca, team members, corporate sponsors, and the TED community, a multitude of talented speakers are coming together to share how their innovative drive adds to the beautifully diverse canvas that is Austin.

"Through our corporate sponsors, the new TEDxLadyBirdLake is positioned as an integral part of the TED community, bringing together new ideas from an extraordinary group of thinkers, visionaries, and life long learners to ignite a platform where one idea shared can change the course of the future,” said Barbara Kelso, Executive Director of TEDxLadyBirdLake. “We invite any company interested in supporting the TEDx community to join our rooster of select companies who are helping us “Keep It Weird” in Austin, Texas."

Speakers at TEDxLadyBirdLake include:

  •     Kendall and John Antonelli – Founders and owners of Antonelli’s Cheese Shop
  •     Rod Hairston – CEO and chairman of Trusum Visions
  •     Daniel Alarik – Military Veteran, Army drill sergeant, and entrepreneur

TEDxLadyBirdLake sponsors include: Intrepid Global Solutions, Audience Generation, Kelso Consultants, VETTED, Mary Taylor Productions, Media Tech Labs, Your 6, and Pied Parker.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today’s leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED’s annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Monica Lewinsky, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a “wish,” or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
