“Take a Deep Breath” from Christian Faith Publishing author Ginnelle Ries is a deeply moving double memoir that, on one hand, tells the story of the author’s difficult journey to becoming a doctor, from her insecurity-ridden childhood to her years attending medical school as a single mother on welfare, and her near-fatal illness—and on the other hand, tells the story of her spiritual growth, and how her husband’s life-after-death experience changes it all.

“Take a Deep Breath”: a soul-stirring memoir of a woman whose life and career as a doctor teaches her about life, death, and life after death. “Take a Deep Breath” is the creation of published author Ginnelle Ries, M.D., a board-certified anesthesiologist for over twenty-three years who lives in Kansas with her husband and five children.

Ginnelle shares, “During one of the early visits that morning, I asked Tim if he had a life-after-death experience during his arrest. He closed his eyes, shook his head yes, but waved his hand back and forth out in front of him in a gesture signaling that he did not want to talk about it. I felt horrible as it looked as if he might cry. Later that day, I was sitting with him when he said, ‘Ginnelle, I thought I was going to die several times yesterday.’ All of a sudden, his lip started to quiver, and a sob escaped soon followed by multiple sobs that shook his entire body. Panic and pure emotional pain rose instantly inside me. One thing I knew about my husband was he was one of the toughest people I knew. I had never seen him cry in eight years of marriage.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Ginnelle Ries’s new book is an unforgettable book that touches on the profoundly intimate details of death and life after clinical death, made all the more moving for its very reality and impact in the author’s own life.

Dr. Ries learns from her husband’s experience during a heart attack that people never really die alone—and it is this insight among plenty in the book that will most comfort those who have lost loved ones.
