SJ Insights Launches Senior Social Media User Panel
LEAWOOD, Kan. (PRWEB) April 26, 2018 -- A record 46 million seniors live in the United States today, and older Americans – those age 65 and older – now account for 15% of the U.S. population. By 2050, 22% of Americans will be 65 and older, according to U.S. Census Bureau projections. At the same time America is graying, recent Pew Research Center surveys find that seniors are also moving towards more digitally connected lives. Around four-in-ten (42%) adults ages 65 and older now report owning smartphones, up from 18% in 2013. Today, 67% of seniors use the Internet – a 55% increase in under two decades. While Pew tells us the level of seniors using the Internet, the research doesn’t tell us how they use the Internet and how they use social media.
For the last several years, SJ Insights’ CEO Sheree Johnson has taught Introduction to Social Media as a Continuing Education course at an area Kansas City college. More often than not, the students in the course are 70+ years old. They are in the course to either learn how to get on Facebook (or sometimes Twitter or Pinterest), or they’re already on Facebook and they want to learn how to use it.
According to Johnson, "in getting to know the 'senior' students over the six hours of the class, they are primarily there to learn how to stay in touch with family and friends and not miss out on pictures or certain posts. They also want to learn from someone who is not a family member."
Even though it is often a family member – son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter who helped them get on Facebook, the seniors in the class made many comments like “my son rushed through showing me Facebook and I don’t remember a thing.” Or, “I don’t want to be embarrassed with my grandchildren by not knowing how to use Facebook after they showed me how to do it.”
Often, several of the senior "students" had been on Facebook for a couple of years but came to the class to pick up tips on setting up an alumni or club group page, or to make sure privacy settings are in place. They also wanted to expand their social media usage to other platforms.
So in order to better understand seniors’ usage, SJ Insights set up a panel to assess all the ways they are using social media, starting with Facebook – what other social media platforms they are using, their thoughts around social media issues, trends, and users. Participants were recruited from where else? Facebook. An initial survey was implemented to test their cooperation and interest, and to explore topics and/or issues to pursue further. Using the results from that survey, the questionnaire will be fine-tuned and expanded, and will roll out on a broader basis by the end of June.
Here are just a few highlights from the initial test panel of 75 seniors:
• 50% of participants have been on Facebook for 5 or more years
• 57% set up their own account; 43% had a relative help them to do so
• The top three reasons for using Facebook were: 1) staying connected to family (68%); 2) to stay in touch with friends (68%); and 3) to see pictures of my grandchildren (47%)
• 87% log-in to Facebook twice a day or more
• They are more likely to log-in to view what others are posting, vs. posting or uploading something frequently themselves
• 79% follow local news media pages compared to 26% who follow national news media pages
• 63% indicated they click on Facebook sponsored posts or advertisements now and then, depending on the advertisers; 11% indicated they click on these posts quite frequently
• On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being extremely satisfied, participants as a group rated Facebook 3.76 (above average) in terms of their satisfaction level
• The top five words they used to describe Facebook were: Fun, Entertaining, Enjoyable, Informative and Engaging
• Almost 50% are very concerned that they are reading something that is “fake” news
• 40% are very concerned that they are exposing personal data to criminals/hackers
• 67% believe that President Trump shouldn’t be using Twitter as means to communicate as frequently as he does
