Portfolium allows prospective employers to assess the credibility of the micro-credential. Our industry partners loved the idea of being able to watch a quick video that shows the learner demonstrating a concrete skill.
SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) April 26, 2018
Escondido Union High School District’s (EUHSD) Competency X program, initially launched at Del Lago Academy - Campus of Applied Science, has partnered with Portfolium to support high school student success through college accredited badging. The program will utilize the student success platform to create opportunities for future career placement through digital badging pathways developed by industry and college partners.
Competency X is a personalized learning assessment system developed for science and engineering practices at EUHSD. In partnership with Portfolium, Competency X will utilize a rubric of skills and qualifications as articulated by the Next Generations Science Standards to track evidence of competencies through Portfolium’s digital badging and learning pathways platform.
Using Portfolium BadgeLink, Competency X will be able to track student learning along curricular and co-curricular pathways, including internships, and automatically award digital badges when students have unlocked achievements or proven their competencies. These digital badges can then be stored in Portfolium’s free ePortfolio network as lifelong learning artifacts, used by students, faculty and employers alike.
On the benefits of Portfolium’s integrative platform, Alec Barron, Project Lead of Competency X, stated that the network allowed “learners to reflect on what led to success with current and past practices. If a learner wants to re-learn a particular skill set, all they have to do is click on their badge to view the tips and strategies that helped them previously reach success.”
Along with improved learning practices, Barron also stated that Portfolium allowed “prospective employers to assess the credibility of the micro-credential,” adding that “our industry partners loved the idea of being able to watch a quick video that shows the learner demonstrating a concrete skill.”
Under the leadership of Biocom Institute, Competency X plans to utilize learning pathways as a bridge for internships, apprenticeships and possible career placement. Biocom has developed specific competency requirements for attaining internship positions, which students within the Competency X program can achieve by completing pre-determined pathways.
“We are very proud to have Competency X as partners in innovating the way high school students approach learning in the curricular and co-curricular level,” said Troy Markowitz, VP Partnerships at Portfolium, “By creating college accredited pathways at an early stage, students will be more prepared to enter the workforce while establishing lifelong learning milestones.”
As an early adopter of Potfolium's digital badging and learning pathways platform, Competency X's badging and assessment practices will be used as a leading model to implement the practice throughout other schools in the Escondido Union High School District. With support by the San Diego STEM Ecosystem, Competency X plans to utilize Portfolium’s platform in order to recruit pathway programs throughout the county as active participants in grander scaling efforts.
Competency X, Biocom Institute, and Portfolium will host a live webinar on May 9th at 10:00 AM PST to teach other educators and institutions how to create their own digital badging pathways. Register for the webinar here.
