New Philosophy Book Defends Concept of Free Will, Calls Determinism An Illusion
TORONTO (PRWEB) April 30, 2018 -- During a discussion with a colleague about free will, By Martin Gerwin realized that the ideas he was expressing were innovative because he hadn’t encountered them in the literature before. He started on the line of research that has led to the publication of his debut philosophy book, “Causes, Agents, Explanations, and Free Will” (published by Archway Publishing).
“If there’s a cause for everything that happens, how is it possible for humans to have free will – to choose what they do knowing that they could have acted differently,” Gerwin queries. “Is free will an illusion?”
In the book Gerwin argues that the very idea of cause and effect is based on one’s experience of being an agent in life and that it is an illusion to think that everything is caused in the same deterministic way. But he says to understand this, one needs to look at the idea of cause and effect, the laws of quantum mechanics and what counts as a scientific explanation. This, he says, has a bearing on one’s sense of self, and also how one is to understand and respect other human beings.
