The financial industry added 2,000 jobs in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report released on Friday, April 6, 2018.

Employment in the financial activities supersector now sits at 8,546,000 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 1.8 percent. The supersector, which includes employment data from the finance and insurance sector and the real estate, rental and leasing sector, has added 32,000 jobs since the beginning of the year while the unemployment rate has dropped by 0.4 percent.
The finance and insurance sector lost 1,600 jobs in March due to losses in the credit intermediation and related activities (-6,100 jobs) subsector. Securities, commodity contracts, investments, and funds and trusts added 1,600 jobs, while insurance carriers and related activities added 2,800 jobs in March.
The real estate, rental and leasing sector added 3,500 jobs in March with an unemployment rate of 2.4 percent. The real estate subsector grew the fastest, adding 2,800 jobs while the rental and leasing services subsector added only 800 jobs.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment added 103,000 new jobs in March while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent for the sixth consecutive month. Employment gains mostly occurred in manufacturing, health care, and mining.
