Jennings, Strouss & Salmon Grows Labor and Employment Department with the Addition of John J. Balitis and Julia S. Acken
PHOENIX, Ariz. (PRWEB) April 30, 2018 -- Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, P.L.C. is pleased to announce that John J. Balitis and Julia S. Acken have joined the firm as members of the Labor and Employment Department.
“John and Julia are not only talented lawyers, but they also fit very well within the firm’s culture,” stated John J. Egbert, Chair of the Jennings Strouss Labor and Employment Department. “They bring a wealth of experience in assisting businesses with both transactional and litigation matters involving employment issues and labor relations. We are very pleased to add their expertise to enhance our ability to provide excellent service to our clients.”
Balitis counsels clients on a broad range of employment law and labor relations matters. He also represents businesses in administrative proceedings before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U.S. Department of Labor, National Labor Relations Board, Arizona Civil Rights Division, Arizona Industrial Commission, Arizona Department of Occupational Safety and Health, and the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Recognizing that some issues need to be resolved at the legislative level, Balitis has participated in drafting and testifying on Arizona employment-related legislation.
In addition to the transactional side of his practice, Balitis litigates employment-related disputes in federal and state courts, and appears and argues before the Arizona Court of Appeals. He has considerable experience prosecuting and defending employment claims in preliminary injunction proceedings, and representing union employers in labor arbitrations involving disputes under collective bargaining agreements. Balitis also serves as an arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association in employment related disputes. He earned his J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law and his B.A. at Dickinson College.
Acken is an experienced labor and employment attorney who has defended numerous companies in gender, race, and disability discrimination cases, as well as wage and hour matters in state and federal court. She also has experience representing clients in administrative proceedings before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board, Arizona Department of Economic Security, Arizona Civil Rights Division, and Arizona Industrial Commission. In addition, Acken provides training to clients in employment best practices and counsels clients regarding both employment and traditional labor matters.
Acken also represents prospective adoptive parents in adoption matters, including private adoptions, step-parent adoptions, and foreign re-adoptions. She counsels prospective adoptive parents on related legal issues, including terminations of parental rights, paternity matters, permanent guardianship, and grandparents’ rights. Acken earned her J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and her B.A. from Indiana University.
