“It’s always such an honor to be part of the Hearthstone BUILDER Award that recognizes the elite in our industry who invest their time, energy and resources to helping others,” said Frank Anton, Vice Chairman Emeritus of Hanley Wood.
WASHINGTON (PRWEB) May 01, 2018
Hanley Wood, the premier information, media, event, and strategic marketing services company serving the residential, commercial design and construction industries, has announced that Patrick Hamill, chairman and CEO of Oakwood Homes, is the recipient of the 2018 Hearthstone Humanitarian Award, presented annually by BUILDER magazine and Hearthstone, a leader in financing single family development.
“It’s always such an honor to be part of the Hearthstone BUILDER Award that recognizes the elite in our industry who invest their time, energy and resources to helping others,” said Frank Anton, Vice Chairman Emeritus of Hanley Wood. “Pat not only has worked hard to become an altruistic leader, but continues his efforts by matching the reward gift with a personal $100,000 donation to the industry.”
Hearthstone and BUILDER, together with founding sponsor Kohler Company, joined forces to recognize builders who go the extra mile to help others. Now in its 19th year, the Hearthstone BUILDER Humanitarian Award has given nearly $6 million to charity, making it the largest philanthropic award in the homebuilding industry, to honor builders who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to making their communities a better place to work and live.
"There is so much pride behind honoring these individuals, year after year, who represent the best of the best in the builder industry,” said Mark Porath, CEO of Hearthstone. “And, what also makes me equally proud is that there are so many great submissions every year. I am always humbled by the self-sacrifice of the leaders in our industry, which inevitably makes it a difficult decision to just select one award recipient. This year, we will all learn from Pat Hamill of his selflessness, and his leadership, and be inspired by it. His charitable work is beyond admirable and we are proud to recognize his efforts and tireless generosity with the 2018 Hearthstone BUILDER Humanitarian Award."
Hamill started Oakwood Homes in 1991 and has led the company to be the largest Colorado builder, while always leaving time for philanthropic activities. He is the founder of the Colorado Home Building Academy to reinvest in the training and education of new talent in the home building community. The Academy offers hands-on learning, classroom teaching and real-life experience with the ultimate goal of job placement and ongoing support for its students.
Hamill also co-founded the Foundation for Educational Excellence and the 21st Century High-Tech Academy in the Green Valley Ranch/Montbello area of Denver. He serves on the board of the Colorado Concern to lead business enterprises in the region. His efforts to support leadership in education saw him appointed by the Governor to serve as co-chair for the Early Childhood Leadership Commission.
He has received a number of awards, including 2016 Corporate Citizen of the Year from the Denver Business Journal, the 2017 Cal Frazier Investing in Education Award from the Public Education Business Coalition and the Dream Maker Award from the I Have a Dream Foundation.
“Pat is very quiet about his philanthropic work, so to see him recognized by his peers for an initiative he took on to solve an industry problem feels really good,” says Amy Schwartz, executive director for BuildStrong Education. “After learning about this award, Pat started a fundraising campaign to build an endowment for the Colorado Homebuilding Academy so that it is sustainable for years to come. He's made a personal contribution and has also reached out to his industry network asking for additional contributions. So the Hearthstone award really started something for us! We really think this model can be replicated across the country and this funding will help us do that. It has been amazing to see the Academy grow from Pat's idea to a reality that is changing individual's lives as well as providing a new workforce pipeline to the Denver homebuilding community."
Pat Hamill was selected by a panel of top industry leaders with experience in humanitarian outreach:
- Frank Anton, Vice Chairman Emeritus, Hanley Wood
- John McManus, Vice President and Editorial Director, Residential Group, Hanley Wood
- Mark Porath, CEO of Hearthstone
- Bert Selva, CEO of Shea Homes
- Larry Webb, CEO of The New Home Co.
- Dan Ryan, CEO of Dan Ryan Homes
- Chris Gaffney, Group President, Toll Brothers
- John Wieland, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, John Wieland Homes & Neighborhoods
- Lori Sanson, executive vice president, DeNova Homes
Oakwood Homes will be honored at the 2018 Housing Leadership Summit, taking place May 14-16 at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel at Dana Point, Cal.
“I’m extremely humbled as well as honored to receive this award and recognition,” said Hamill. “I have given the award as well as the dollars a great deal of thought and believe that since the funds are coming from the industry, I would like those funds to stay within the industry. With that being said I would like to put up an additional $100,000 dollars, personally, that can be used as a matching fund to raise additional funds either from your sources as well as for the BuildStrong Educational Foundation to use as a beginning of an endowment campaign for the Colorado Homebuilding Academy to ensure that this is going to be here serving future generations of the housing industry.”
Hearthstone was the first, and today is the largest institutional investor solely focused on for-sale residential development in the country, with over $15 billion committed to the homebuilding industry since 1992. This commitment represents the financing of over 500 communities in 20 states.
