Idaho students using Imagine Language & Literacy program show substantial growth
PROVO, Utah (PRWEB) May 14, 2018 -- According to recent third-party research conducted by SEG Measurement, Idaho students who use the Imagine Language & Literacy digital software demonstrated statistically significant literary growth based on a Lexile® framework measure.
This beginning-to-mid-year study found that the students, ranging from grades 2–8, achieved average Lexile growth of 127L which is higher than expected based on average annual growth reported in other states.
“We are so grateful for our partnership with the state of Idaho,” said Joe Swenson, CEO of Imagine Learning. “The Idaho Department of Education has worked tirelessly to ensure the individual needs of English learners are met, and we are excited about the growth these students are experiencing.”
News of the study comes as the Idaho State Department of Education (SDE) is finishing a state-wide approach to helping English learners (ELs) through Imagine Language & Literacy. The initiative serves 7,000 EL students. Beyond the state-wide partnership, a number of Idaho schools have implemented Imagine Language & Literacy to work with all students in grades K-6.
SDE worked closely with Imagine Learning to ensure licenses were used faithfully and spread throughout the state, including areas with high refugee populations and rural areas that often lack EL-certified teachers. Christina Nava, Director of English Learners and Migrant Education for the Idaho SDE, added, “I am thankful for the partnership with Imagine Learning representatives in supporting our schools with their English learners.”
Imagine Language & Literacy offers strategic first-language support in 15 languages. As students become more proficient in English, the language support gradually fades, preparing students for English-only environments. In addition to strategic translations, the program also focuses on academic and social language, and uses peer modeling to illustrate concepts. The adaptive instruction and personalized learning paths align with the goal of SDE to embrace each English learner’s unique identity.
The Reading Level Assessment (RLA) used to assess literacy in this study was the Imagine Learning Reading Level Assessment (RLA). The RLA incorporates The Lexile® Framework for Reading, a scientifically-based developmental scale of reading ability. The test was developed by MetaMetrics® and is designed to measure a reader’s ability to comprehend texts of increasing difficulty. Students’ performance on test items is reported on the Lexile scale, which is a widely accepted scale with extensive research support and established reliability and validity. The third-party research measured growth from beginning of year to the middle of year for approximately 1,800 Idaho students during the 2017–2018 school year.
