Competitors from eight states and Canada travel to Anacortes for the annual Pacific Northwest Regional Shuffleboard Championship

shuffleboard is a great sport because it creates long-lasting friendships

The public is invited to register for the PNW Regional Shuffleboard Championship, which will be hosted from May 24-28 at Swinomish Casino & Lodge.

Those who wish to compete may register any day of the tournament from 8-10 a.m. at the Wa Walton Event Center, located inside Swinomish Casino & Lodge. Registration costs $35, which includes a salmon dinner, plus an entry fee. This year, competitors are travelling from at least eight states as well as Canada, said Brian Wilbur, the tournament director.

Competitors will be divided into two divisions so that they compete against similar play levels. The competition will kick off with an A/B draw on May 24, followed by singles events from May 25-26 and doubles events from May 27-28. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is providing salmon for a dinner on May 26, which will feature barbecue salmon.

The PNW Regional Shuffleboard Championship started in Spokane approximately 50 years ago. Since then, different hosts have organized the event each year. This is the second time that Wilbur and his wife, Trish, have hosted the shuffleboard tournament. They hosted last year’s event in Burlington, which included 67 competitors and $19,000 awarded in prizes. Wilbur expects even more participation and prize money at this year’s tournament.

Wilbur said that shuffleboard is a great sport because it creates long-lasting friendships.

“You meet a lot of great people from around the country. It becomes sort of like a shuffleboard family. When you travel, you get to see people you met. It’s like a family reunion really.”
