San Diego's Balboa Park Summer Kicks Off Friday, June 1st
SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) May 25, 2018 -- The organizations in Balboa Park are working together to turn up the heat this summer with an incredible diversity of special exhibitions, events, and activities across the park! Balboa Park Summer Kick-off Friday, June 1st
Your Balboa Park Summer officially kicks off on Friday, June 1st at 4:00 pm with food, fun, and a free concert in the Plaza de Panama. A variety of more than a dozen food trucks will line El Prado in the heart of the park. Many popular attractions will be open late, including the Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the San Diego Museum of Art. Games and other family activities will be accompanied by musical entertainment from Tavo and Mariachi 3.0. At 5:45 pm ensembles from the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory will perform, leading to the main event: the world-renown San Diego Youth Symphony’s Orchestra and Wind Orchestra, led by Music Director Jeff Edmons, will perform excerpts and selections from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles, Shostakovich’s Galop, and more. Truly a great night of art and culture!
Friday Night Alive! Every Friday, through August 31st
The celebration continues and Friday nights come alive as we bring together two fan favorite events for one terrific evening! Food Truck Friday and Balboa Park After Dark combine for a rich night of games, hands-on creative projects, live entertainment, a rotating assortment of food truck cuisine, and evening hours at several popular attractions. Special deals include $5 after 5:00 pm at the San Diego Museum of Art, half-price admission to the San Diego Natural History Museum (which also features a rooftop bar with incredible views, closing at 8:00 pm), and the studios in Spanish Village Art Center, with artists engaging visitors for “DIY Friday” art activities. Food trucks begin serving at 4:00 pm.
An Endless Summer of Discovery and Fun, through September 3rd
Every month features a variety of performances, exhibitions, and events that are sure to keep visitors coming back to the park all summer long. Enjoy casual experiences, like a tango lesson on Monday night at Centro Cultural de la Raza, craft beer and the Wednesday night Jazz Jam at Panama 66, a tour of our solar system led by the Fleet Science Center’s astronomer at “The Sky Tonight,” or a free twilight concert at the Spreckels Organ pavilion. Seek out adults-only events like “The Secret Society of Adultologists” at the San Diego Natural History Museum, “Culture and Cocktails” at the San Diego Museum of Art, or “Beer, Bir, Bjór” international beer tasting at the Museum of Man. And see some amazing exhibitions, like the San Diego Air and Space Museum’s “SPEED: Science in Motion,” which features a new genre of vehicles monthly, “Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition” at the Fleet Science Center, “LGBTQ + San Diego: Stories of Struggles and Triumphs” at the San Diego History Center, and “George Hurrell: Hollywood Glamour” at the Museum of Photographic Arts. Not to be left out, there are many storytelling and hands-on exhibits, events, and activities for children of all ages.
Balboa Park Summer runs from June 1st through September 3rd. A microsite at https://www.balboaparksummer.org/ provides clear visitor information, including monthly schedules, where to eat and shop in the park, and best options for how to get to the park. (Hint: if driving, park at Inspiration Point and take the free tram into the heart of the park.) Balboa Park Explorer Passes are recommended for purchase, and provide access to 16 museums, making it easy to hop between exhibitions and experiences.
