Saturn Systems Announces Release of New Real-Time Ship Tracking Software for Duluth, Minnesota Port
DULUTH, Minn. (PRWEB) May 30, 2018 -- Saturn Systems, a national provider of custom software development and quality assurance services recently launched Harbor Lookout, a new ship tracking application that provides real-time arrival and departure information for shipping traffic within the ports of Duluth, Two Harbors and Silver Bay in Minnesota and the port of Superior in Wisconsin.
The application features estimated arrival and departure information for each ship as well as additional details including type of ship, year built, size, speed, cargo type and more. It also includes an interactive map displaying the current location of each ship.
Saturn development teams frequently brainstorm ideas for unique, innovative applications and identify new technologies that could be used to develop them. During downtime between assignments, these internal projects provide experienced developers with an opportunity to train on new technologies and allow new employees to acquire hands-on experience with Saturn’s established development processes.
“Providing continuous opportunities for our software developers to train on new technologies is an integral part of how we maintain our level of expertise”, said Scott Risdal, VP of Business Development. “Harbor Lookout is an example of one of those training opportunities. What started out as a brainstorming session, developed over time into a fully functioning application.”
Gathering and reporting shipping information for the application is part of a collaborative effort between Saturn Systems and the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association (LSMMA). During development, Saturn Systems invested in an antenna that was installed at their headquarters in downtown Duluth, MN. The antenna has a 50-mile range, or a 2-hour timeframe, and gathers real-time arrival and departure information, as self-reported by the ships. To provide information outside the 2-hour window, Saturn Systems reached out to LSMMA to tap into their knowledge of future arrivals and departures. Visitors to the Twin Ports area can stop by the Lake Superior Maritime Museum to view the application located on display monitors throughout their space.
Harbor Lookout is a web-based application that can be accessed via computer or mobile device at HarborLookout.com.
