Future Hosting Pushes For Wider Adoption of HTTPS By Small Businesses

The advice follows Google’s announcement that its Chrome browser will soon mark any website without SSL as insecure.
SSL certificates are inexpensive, much easier to use than they once were, and help protect web users from man-in-the-middle attacks and snooping. As a provider of managed server hosting to thousands of business sites, Future Hosting supports wider SSL adoption but is concerned that small businesses will lose revenue and suffer damage to their reputation if they don’t implement HTTPS in time.
To encourage small businesses to protect their sites and users, Future Hosting has slashed the price of its SSL certificates and is providing an extra year of standard SSL coverage for free.
Google’s move is part of its years'-long attempt to make HTTPS ubiquitous on the web. In the past, web browsers marked sites as “secure” if they offer encrypted HTTPS connections. Sites without HTTPS were not marked. But from September 2018, Chrome will stop displaying “secure” notices for HTTPS pages. From October 2018, it will display “insecure” notices for non-HTTPS pages.
If a site does not have an SSL certificate or offer secure HTTPS connections, Google Chrome will display a prominent notice warning that the site is insecure.
“SSL adoption has skyrocketed over the last few years, but there are still many smaller sites that are not protected and will be considered insecure from October,“ said Maulesh Patel, VP of Operations of Future Hosting, “We’re concerned that small businesses and creative professionals may be negatively affected by the changes to Google Chrome, and we want to encourage business site owners to migrate to HTTPS as soon as possible.”
Sites that send and receive sensitive information, including eCommerce stores, should already offer HTTPS. But many blogs, business sites, forums, and web applications do not. Most Google Chrome users will not understand exactly what is “insecure” about a site without HTTPS: a situation likely to damage confidence and conversion rates.
SSL certificates have a dual role: they are issued by Certificate Authorities, which verify the identity of the certificate holder, and they are used in the creation of encrypted SSL connections that prevent third-parties from reading or altering information as it travels over the internet.
