Filoli Announces Its First-Ever "Summer Nights" Event Series
WOODSIDE, Calif. (PRWEB) June 05, 2018 -- Filoli today announced its first-ever “Summer Nights” events series, which will kick off this Thursday, June 7th and take place once a week from 5:00PM - 8:00PM through Thursday, August 30th. The distinguished estate will invite members and non-members of all ages to enjoy the warm weather, long summer days and beautiful blooms during its extended summer hours, in which the property will remain open for three additional hours.
Every Thursday will focus on a unique theme and feature special guest appearances from scholars and experts around the Bay Area, including professors from Santa Clara University, professional beekeepers, florists, and more. On select Thursday evenings, Filoli will host small workshops, activities and classes for an additional fee, including, a wine and floral design workshop, yoga by the pool, a wine and painting workshop, and more. Sunset Hikes will be offered every Thursday evening at 6PM for $10 (plus admission). Members will have special access to additional complimentary tours, tastings and lectures each Thursday.
All members, regardless of membership level, will be invited to attend Summer Nights and bring a guest for free after 5PM. General admission fees will apply for non-members. The full lineup for Filoli’s 2018 Summer Nights events series will be as follows:
Thursday, June 7: Curator’s Pleasure
Filoli’s first Summer Night kicks off on Thursday, June 7th with special lectures by Santa Clara University professors Robert Senkewicz and Rose Marie Beebe at 5:45PM. The lectures will focus on early California, from 1815 to 1848, through the eyes of women. A “Wine & Design” floral arranging workshop will be available for an additional fee. Members are invited to visit the second floor of the house, tour the libraries, meet the curatorial staff and see Filoli’s classrooms, which are situated in the master bedrooms of the house.
Thursday, June 14: Summer Blooms
The second Thursday in June will focus on summer blooms with a special lecture by Patti Spezzaferro of UC Master Gardeners from 5:45PM - 6:30PM on “Why We Love Roses.” A Flower Essence station will be set-up for guests to stop by and enjoy the delightful fragrances of flowers grown at Filoli. A “Hike & Sketch” workshop will also be offered for an additional fee. Members are invited to take tours of the greenhouses, rose gardens or trees of Filoli. The tours will be available first come, first serve.
Thursday, June 21: Summer Solstice
Kick off the first official day of summer at Filoli with a special lecture hosted by Santa Clara University professor Lucy Diekmann on growing good food and how urban gardens can help combat food insecurity in Silicon Valley. A free glass of wine will be offered to those wearing a flower “beard” or flower crown. Guests are also invited to practice Aromatherapy and Forest Bathing as well as attend a yoga session by the pool. Members are invited to the join the yoga session for free and non-members can choose to pay a $10 donation.
Thursday, June 28: Bug Out and Bee Wild
On this special Thursday evening, Filoli will open its gates to the Gentleman’s Orchards where guests can visit the incredible bee hives. Guests are invited to create insect origami and sit in on a special lecture by Professional Beekeeper Kendal Sager about bees from 5:30PM - 6:15PM. Members will have access to a complimentary “Honey Tasting and Talk.” The tasting and talk will be available first come, first serve.
Thursday, July 5: Americana Swing Night
Celebrate life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness on this post-Fourth of July Thursday evening. The July 5th Summer Night event will be focused on old-fashioned lawn games, and Americana Swing. A Sunset Hike will be available for free for members on this evening (first come, first serve, limited space available) and at an additional cost for non-members.
Thursday, July 12: Roaring 20’s
Head to Filoli on July 12th for an evening of nostalgia and fun. Vintage cars and 1920’s fashion will be on display throughout the house. Guests are invited to play old-fashioned lawn games throughout the evening. Members are welcome to join a lecture in the ballroom by Paul Price who will share the history and background on Agnes Moody Bourn, the first tastemaker of Filoli, starting at 6:30PM.
Thursday, July 19: Summer Blooms
The July 19th evening will feature an educational lecture from Santa Clara University Professor Edward Rooks on Filoli through an artist’s eye. In addition, a Flower Essence Station will be set up for guests to enjoy. Members are invited to attend tours of the rose gardens or trees of Filoli.
Thursday, July 26: Health & Wellness Night
Thursday, July 26th will offer a Filoli Herbal Tea Tasting, Forest Bathing and Hand Spa with Sonoma Lavender. For an additional fee, guests can also attend a yoga class or “Wine & Design” Monet-style painting workshop.
Thursday, August 2: Curator’s Pleasure
The first Thursday in August will include a special lecture hosted by Santa Clara University Professor Lee Panich on the hidden lives of mission indians and archaeological insights from colonial California, along with a talk on embroidered objects in the house from SCU’s art historian, Andrea Pappas. For members, the second floor of the house, Libraries, Nature Center and Estate Trail will be open with live music.
Thursday, August 9: Celebrating the Italian Gardeners
Thursday, August 9th will celebrate Italian culture with music by Italian Street Singers, Il Duetto Musica, and Bocce Ball on the bowling green lawn, an ode to the many Italian Gardeners of Filoli’s past who spent time playing Bocce Ball to unwind and relax. Members are invited to tour the greenhouses.
Thursday, August 16: Kids Night Out
The Summer Nights “Kids Night Out” event includes live music by Andy Z and the Andyland Band and old-fashioned lawn games. Members have the option to join a lip balm making workshop with Beekeeper Kendal Sager.
Thursday, August 23: Health & Wellness Night
Guests are invited to join Filoli for a Herbal Tea and Shrub Tasting, Hand Spas with Sonoma Lavender and Forest Bathing. Yoga will be available at no cost to members and $10 to non-members.
Thursday, August 30: Summer Art Exhibit Closing Night
The Summer Nights events series will wrap on Thursday, August 30th with a special art exhibit of paintings by Roland Petersen and an all-glass sculpture exhibit throughout the gardens. Artists who wish to paint plein-air will have the opportunity to take advantage of Artist Access for free. Members are invited to attend an Art of Filoli tour.
