Petplan Finds 70 Percent of Pet Parents Adopted Their Cat from a Shelter
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (PRWEB) June 25, 2018 -- In a recent survey, more than 1,400 Petplan pet insurance policyholders offered their insights on life as a cat parent. Since June is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, Petplan is sharing some of its findings in an effort to inspire potential pet parents to invite adoptable cats into loving “fur-ever homes.”
Fortunately, for hopeful shelter cats, approximately 70 percent of surveyed pet parents adopted their cat from a shelter, and 56 percent have two or more cats in their home. In fact, five percent reported five or more feline housemates.
“We were delighted to see that the majority of the cats protected by Petplan were adopted from animal shelters,” said Petplan’s Vice President of Channel Development, Steve Shell. “There are many benefits to adopting a pet, but whether your pet comes from a breeder or a shelter, there’s always a chance that they’ll become sick or injured. Pet insurance can help pay for unexpected veterinary care if a new furry family member needs treatment.”
Petplan’s survey also suggests that a significant percentage of pet parents bring more cats into their homes as they grow older. About 44 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 reported living with two or more cats; the percentage of multiple cat households increased to 62 percent in people aged 35 to 55.
“One of the things we noticed among our 55+ policyholders is that the percentage of multiple cat households begins to decrease,” said Shell. “Later in life, a lot more people are on fixed incomes that may not be able to absorb unexpected veterinary expenses. One of the reasons we’re so proud of our AARP partnership is that it allows us to offer discounted rates to the pet parents who may need them the most.”
Shelter cats may take the spotlight in June, but many animal lovers invite more than one type of pet into their lives. About 17 percent of Petplan’s survey respondents have both cats and dogs living together in four-legged harmony. An upcoming survey will compare cat- and dog-exclusive pet parents, so stay tuned!
